Does an ultrasound procedure hurt?

In most cases, an ultrasound scan does not hurt. It is a non-invasive procedure, which means it does not usually involve needles or cuts. Many people find it a little uncomfortable at most, but not painful.

The scan uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. A clinician moves a small probe over your skin, often with gel to help it glide smoothly. You may feel some pressure, but this is usually mild.

What might feel uncomfortable?

The most common discomfort comes from the probe being pressed against the skin. If the area being scanned is already sore, tender, or swollen, that pressure may feel worse. Some scans also require you to lie still for a while, which can feel awkward.

For certain types of ultrasound, such as pelvic scans, you may need a full bladder, which can be uncomfortable. Internal scans, like transvaginal or transrectal ultrasounds, may cause some pressure or embarrassment, but they are usually not painful when carried out gently. The staff should explain what to expect before starting.

When an ultrasound could cause pain

Although the scan itself should not be painful, pain can happen if the body area is already injured or inflamed. For example, scanning a painful lump, a strained muscle, or an abdominal area affected by illness may cause tenderness. The scan is not usually the cause of the pain, but it may highlight it.

Occasionally, an internal ultrasound may feel uncomfortable if you are tense or anxious. Relaxing the muscles can make the procedure easier. If you do feel pain, you should say so straight away.

How to make the scan more comfortable

It can help to wear loose clothing and follow any instructions you are given before the appointment. If you have been asked to drink water beforehand, try to time it carefully so you are not too uncomfortable on arrival. Let the sonographer know if you are nervous or in pain.

You can ask for the scan to be paused if you need a break. In the UK, NHS staff are used to helping patients feel at ease and will usually talk you through each step. Clear communication can make the procedure much more manageable.

After the ultrasound

Most people feel completely fine afterwards. There is usually no recovery time needed, and you can carry on with your normal day. If a gel was used, it may simply be wiped off your skin.

If you felt pain during the scan, it should settle quickly once the procedure is over. If you continue to have pain afterwards, it is likely related to the condition being investigated rather than the ultrasound itself. In that case, it is worth speaking to your GP or clinician.
